Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD) or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects women and reaches to the reproductive period. This is defined by menstrual abnormalities, high levels of male hormones and follicular cyst in the ovary. Some of the complications that may occur include; obesity, acne, hirsutism, alopecia and infertility. The conventional treatment of PCOD includes using Jejem diseases control pills or oral contraceptive pills, metformin, or fertility medications. But, in modern society, many females try to find a natural way to treat their infertility like Ayurveda.
Ayurveda is the traditional Indian medical practice which delivers the rebalancing of the body, mind, and soul through the utilizing of proper diet, adequate lifestyle and changes, the herbal remedies and therapeutic options. So, when it comes to PCOD, Ayurveda deals with the hormonal problem, helps to correct the menstrual cycle, and treats the whole person with the main disease. Here’s a detailed look at how Ayurveda approaches PCOD:
1. Understanding PCOD in Ayurveda:
In Ayurveda the basic structural complexity of the body is described in terms of three initial dosha, namely, Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Paintal: Each dosha constitutes components and works, different in the body; disease occurs when one or more doshas get out of balance. PCOD is considered to be related to a disorder of the Kapha dosha, a dosha responsible for stability, lubrication and growth and the Vata dosha that controls movement and circulation.
Kapha Imbalance: High Kapha results in sluggishness, swelling and increase in body mass. In PCOD, it can present as overweight, cysts in the ovary and a slow metabolic rate.
Vata Imbalance: Vata is known to throw the menstrual cycle off balance resulting in infertility and leading to PCOD related anxiety and stress.
Therefore, Ayurvedictreatment of PCOD is directed at reducing the increased level of the Kapha and Vatadoshas that accumulated in the patients’ body and led to hormonal imbalance, ovulation dysfunction and the listed symptoms.
2. Ayurvedic Herbs for PCOD:
Some of the Ayurvedic herbs which possess phytoestrogenc properties that help to over come hormonal imbalance and perceive menstrual cycle. Some of the most effective herbs for treating PCOD include:
Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus): Shatavari is an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine that has properties of an adaptogen that benefits the female reproductive system, normalize hormonal functioning and the menstrual cycle. That is why it is also helpful in stress reduction, of which I suffer from stress a lot since PCOD is usually accompanied by stress.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): Avizor suggests that this herb helps to stress and balance hormones. Ashwagandha can positively affect adrenals, and thus rule out the overproduction of androgens – male sex hormones which are overproduced in women with PCOD.
Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia): Guduchi is reported to possess the high degree of therapeutic uses such as detoxifying the human body and strengthening the immune system of the body. The herbs can serve to detoxify blood, aid digestion and increase energy levels – which is a crucial factor to bear PCOD effectively.
Triphala: Constitution of three fruits Amalaki Haritaki and Bibhitaki Triphala is useful in digestion problems metabolism and detoxification. It has beneficial effects on all of them doshas, especially the Kapha dosha and may have weight loss benefits.
Kanchanar Guggulu: Kanchanar Guggulu is a classical Ayurveda formulation that is mainly used to reduce cysts and tumour size. The ingredients in it may support the thyroid gland and settle hormonal changes in women affected by PCOD.
Turmeric (Curcuma longa): This spice is anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant in nature that will help to lower inflammation in the ovary and the health of the reproductive system.
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum): They do not contain significant content of vitamins and minerals, but are helpful with regard to the regulation of blood glucose level which is necessary for combating the insulin resistance – a typical characteristic of PCOD women.
3. Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations:
The treatment in Ayurveda for PCOD is focused on dietary modifications and having a regular life schedule. New fresh and cooked food can help to reduce your Kapha, increase the metabolic process and become healthy. Key dietary guidelines include:
Incorporate Whole Foods: It is preferred to choose the goods, which are usually fresh, organically grown and of the season as they are normally light foods. Add as many servings of fruits and vegetables and as many food products containing whole grains and lean proteins such as legumes, tofu and lean meats as possible.
Reduce Processed Foods and Sugar: Reduce the intake of sugar from the processed products, avoid foods that are cooked using a lot of oil and avoid eating some processed snacks. These can further intensify insulin resistance, and contribute to weight gain, which are seen in PCOD condition.
Favor Anti-Inflammatory Foods: Avoid eating foods that cause inflammation in the body by using condiments such as turmeric, ginger, garlic and cinnamon in food preparation.
Warm, Cooked Meals: Cooked food which is slightly warm according to Ayurveda is light and helps in proper digestion. Raw foods generally should not be consumed and especially during the Kapha season, which is the late winter and early spring.
Hydration: It is recommended that you consume as much warm water or herbal teas for the whole day as possible. Saying no to sweetened beverages and caffeine products because they tend to worsen the PCOD conditions.
Lifestyle Tips:
Regular Exercise: One can lose additional weight, regulate hormones and circulation in the body with moderate exercises like yoga, walking or swimming.
Stress Management: Yoga, meditation, and pranayama can be very useful to combat stress and stabilize the nervous system and hormone production..
Sleep: Make sure to get enough sleep, and don’t just sleep at night because poor sleep disrupts the natural release of hormones that control weight and leads to more weight gain.
4. Panchakarma Detoxification:
Panchakarma is a therapy of Ayurveda in which toxins stored in the body or ama are removed from body and doshas are balanced. It can be very useful in the case of PCOD affected women who suffer from metabolic abnormalities, weight gain as well as gastritis problems. Although most of the ayurvedic procedures focus on the five Panchakarma therapies including Vaman, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Rakt moksha among them Virechana (purgation therapy) and Abhyanga (oil massage) are proven to be useful to eliminate toxins, stimulate blood flow and revitalize the reproductive organs.
